I have not one but two "favorites." The first was the Heber Creeper, a dinner train pulled by a Shay out of Heber, Utah in the mid 1970's. The ride was not exactly spectacular, but it was special because my parents were there and, in my memory, are there still. The second is the White Pass & Yukon Railway running out of Skagway, Alaska. For stunning mountain beauty, a roadbed chiseled and blasted from sheer rock walls, deep chasms carved by glaciers, fog-shrouded canyons, and exhilerating peaks, this Canadian-owned line is unsurpassed anywhere in the northern hemisphere. At one point, it passes a huge granite slab that fell from the cliffs above, becoming the permanent grave marker for the railroad workers caught by its fall.
